FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - A lead detective who spent years on the April Tinsley case finally gets closure after John Miller was sentenced to 80 years in prison for the murder of April Tinsley.

Retired Fort Wayne Officer, Dan Camp was a lead detective on the April Tinsley case starting in 1989. He said he worked on the case for five years and could not wrap his head around it.

“I took it so personally, it kind of hurt my family life and everything else,” Camp said. “It drew me away from my family so much because I was demoting so much time to the case.”

On Friday morning, John Miller was sentenced to 80 years in prison for the murder of 8-year-old April Tinsley.

Camp said the announcement made him feel as if all the weight of the world just went away.

Camp said April Tinsley and her family have become a big part of his life. He said once it’s his time to go, he would like to meet April himself.

“I hope it’s possible that I can meet April,” Camp said. “I would like to do that.”
