FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - Mayor Tom Henry and members of the Fort Wayne City Council are getting together to press for change in the bidding process for solid waste contracts.

A resolution will be presented at the next Council meeting, on Tuesday. It will request that the Indiana General Assembly change the law that requires most local government to accept the lowest bidder for trash collection and recycling services. Henry told Fort Wayne’s NBC last week that he intended to request such a change.

The move follows a multi-year headache for officials and residents punctuated by missed pickups and shoddy service by Red River Waste Solutions, a Texas-based company that won the most recent contract. While any change would not affect the current situation, Henry said it would result in a better situation for the next round of bids.

“Right now, the City of Indianapolis has this ability to use the Request for Proposal process, but other cities and towns do not,” a spokesperson for the mayor said. “So this would allow an option for other cities to use that process rather than going with the low bid.”

Council meets at 5:30 p.m. in room 35 at Citizens Square.
