FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - As the coldest weather of the season so far moves through the area, Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control (FWACC) is reminding residents to keep their pets warm.

When the temperature drops, several city ordinances kick in aimed at protecting pets. One of which states animals must be brought into a temperature-controlled building when it’s at or below ten degrees outside or a windchill warning has been issued by a local, state, or national authority. There is an exception when the animal is in visual range of a competent adult of who is outside with the animal.

A spokesperson for FWACC says when temperatures drop this low, the best place for outdoor dogs and cats to stay warm is a heated garage or other temperature-controlled structure with straw bedding. Don’t use hay or a blanket, they warn, as they hold onto moisture--making it even colder. Another tip is to make sure their water and food aren’t frozen.

“You can always call our office our phone number is 427-1244 and you want to choose option one. And if you are not sure about a situation, you can give us a call. Our dispatchers are trained and can talk you through a situation to see if there are any dangerous violations happening and then we can send out an officer if we need to,” Holly Eggelston, FWACC marketing manager said.

Eggleston says they answer calls from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and after those hours, you can call 260-449-3000 for officer assistance.
