FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - Many counties in northeast Indiana, including Allen, remain under a travel warning Thursday morning after heavy snow.

Drivers are advised to stay off the road as the travel warning is in place--the highest level of local travel advisory. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security says the advisory means that travel may be restricted to emergency management workers only. During a “warning” local travel advisory, the department says individuals are directed to:

  • refrain from all travel;
  • comply with necessary emergency measures;
  • cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans; and
  • obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers.

As of 5 a.m. Thursday, the following area counties were included in the warning: Allen, Noble, Whitley, Huntington, Wabash, Steuben and LaGrange.

Other counties in the area -- with the exception of Jay County -- are under a travel watch, which is the second-highest category. That means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a “watch” local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations.
