FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - Face masks on the Purdue Fort Wayne campus will become optional for many indoor spaces beginning Monday, the university announced Friday.

The change from requirement for face masks to optional is because of an all-time low of self-reported cases on campus and in anticipation of the CDC revising guidance on face masks Friday afternoon the university said. Face masks will still be required in all classrooms, labs and studios, the PFW Ready Committee said. Some co-curricular activities, including a career fair next week, will still require masks.

If reported cases remain low, the university will implement further relaxed face mask requirements on March 21.

The temporary indoor face mask requirement was originally implemented in August 2021 as a means to control the spread of COVID-19 on campus, the university said. The mask requirement was extended several times. The last extension of the mask requirement was implemented on January 28, because of reported cases. The university had planned on reviewing the mandate on March 18.
