FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - Have you filed your taxes yet? If not, then you need to hurry up because the federal deadline to file is midnight.

That deadline was pushed back this year because April 15th fell on Good Friday and Washington D.C. observed emancipation Day on Friday too.

“Today is the day to be patient because we’re all super busy,” Liberty Tax owner Dori Miller said. “I really like my customers not to be surprised when they do their taxes each year. They should walk in my office and not be nervous about what it’s going to be.”

The phones were ringing off the hook Monday at Liberty Tax as people try to meet that important deadline. The last few years, the federal government has pushed back the deadline by a few months. This year though, the deadline was only a few days later.

Miller says her team is happy to help, but she says it’s crucial for you to be ready if you stop by.

“We need all tax documents they’ve received in the mail the last few months,” Miller said. “That includes W-2 wages and interest, and income and deductions.”

If it’s impossible for you to make the deadline, Miller says it’s important to remember you can file an extension if you don’t owe money.

“There is no extension if you have to pay” Miller said. “So if you are not filing simply because you owe money, that doesn’t work and you still have today as the due date for all payments.”

Miller says getting your taxes done as soon as possible, will relieve a lot of stress.

“Take a breath, file an extension, get your taxes done,” Miller said.

Officials with the IRS also want to remind you to be patient. They says it may take time to receive your refund because of staffing shortages within the agency.
