FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - Nine-year Komets veteran Shawn Szydlowski is not expected to return to Fort Wayne, next fall.

The Fort Wayne Komets left their former ECHL MVP and Kelly Cup champ off their end-of-season roster, thus making him a free agent for the season ahead.

Szydlowski told WPTA-TV the move feels like a divorce, but that’s only because the Komets and the team’s fans have felt like family over the years.

The 31-year-old out of St. Clair Shores, MI likened Komets fans to Detroit Red Wings fans.

“When you’re in Fort Wayne, I tell everyone all the time it seriously feels like being a Red Wing in Detroit, and that’s the best compliment I could give it,” Sydlowski said on Thursday night.

Szydlowski said no place he plays will ever compare to Fort Wayne and its fans.
