FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) is warning the public of a scam that is happening at gas stations and local shopping center parking lots.

The FWPD says someone will approach a person in the lot and give them a ‘tale of woe’ while trying to sell them jewelry for a very small amount of money. The jewelry, police say, is heavy and appears to be genuine at the time, when in actuality it is either highly polished brass or heavily gold plated junk metal and worthless. The citizen that is scammed by purchasing the jewelry, does not know this until they go to a business.

Police say the suspects have heavy accents and are very aggressive in their sales pitch.

The FWPD believes the scammers are taking advantage of the economy and preying on people wanting to make extra money or just wanting to get the aggressive seller out of their personal space.

If anyone comes in contact with the suspects attempting to sell junk jewelry, the FWPD says to call 911.
