FWPD gives all-clear at West Wind Apartments

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) gave the all-clear Friday afternoon after asking residents earlier in the day to avoid the area of the West Wind Apartments or to remain indoors because of heavy police activity in the area.

FWPD says around 9:13 a.m., officers responded to a call about a man making threats to hurt himself and others. FWPD was able to ping the man’s cell phone to the 2100 block of West Point Drive, inside the West Wind Apartment complex, of Harris Road.

The man refused to come out voluntarily, even after numerous requests by officers, the FWPD says. The Emergency Service Team (EST), Crisis Response Team (CRT), and the Air Support Unit were called. FWPD says a secure perimeter was set. Residents near the barricaded man were evacuated or sheltered in place while CRT talked with the man over the phone who police say was the only person in the apartment. An Indiana Public Alert Warning System (IPAWS) alert was also sent out to citizens asking them to avoid the area.

After several hours, officers were able to get the man to come out on his own, FWPD says. The man was taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.

FWPD says no one was injured during the incident and the IPAWS warning has been lifted and normal traffic has resumed.

The incident is under investigation.
